Please check out the 5th grade calendar for some recent updates!
Progress reports are going home in the next few days. Please encourage your kiddo to stay on top of corrections and missing work. Science: This week is our final week covering Life Science. Students should expect homework to prepare for the Life Science Test as well as the STAAR test. The Life Science Test will be Monday, April 29th. Then we will move into our Rocketry unit and start building rockets. We will learn about drag and lift, the history of space exploration, and the physics of how rockets work, applying what we know about Newton’s Laws of Motion. If you have not already filled out the google form allowing permission to watch October Sky, please do so. All launches will take place during our 5th grade recess time from 10:15-11am and two classes will launch per day. Parents are welcome to join if they wish to watch their student’s rocket launch. Our tentative schedule is: Friday, May 3 -- Mayer & Briles Homerooms Monday, May 6 -- Wirht & Cotten Homerooms Tuesday, May 7-- Salome & Wilder Homerooms The Science STAAR test is Wednesday, May 15th. Students will be receiving a review packet soon and should be expected to regularly review the packet as well as practice their vocabulary on Quizlet and/or practice worksheets at home. After the Science STAAR test, there is still more to learn! We have our human body systems unit that leads up to our fetal pig dissection. More information will come regarding these engaging lessons. Water Bear Club: Mrs. Cotten has written a letter explaining her absence and need to cancel Water Bear Club. The letter was sent home in Wednesday folders for those students who are enrolled in this session. There is also additional information about the next session and possible publication with Texas Medical Association in the letter. If you did not receive a letter and would like to know more, the letter is available here. Also, please see attached release form. Finally, next week is the last week of this session. To sign up for the last three-week session, please visit: https://forms.gle/io4hVMKbrVxg5bAB8 Murchison Modernization Project (message from Mrs. Newton): We would like to invite all incoming 6th grade parents to a presentation to learn more about the upcoming Modernization Construction Project at Murchison Middle School on Monday, May 6 at 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. in the Murchison Cafeteria. Please check out the 5th grade calendar for some updates! 5th grade will be heading to the Bob Bullock Museum next Tuesday, April 23. Buses depart Hill at 9:00 AM and should arrive at the museum well before our 10:00 AM IMAX screening of "Amazon Adventure 3D". The movie runs for 45 minutes, after which time we will reload the buses and head back to Hill. We'll be back well before our regular lunch time so there is no need to pack a sack lunch for this field trip. The museum does welcome parent chaperones so long as you pay for your own ticket and meet us there. All parents would of course had to have already attended the Hill Parent Volunteer Training. Insect Garden Planting Day is April 27th! 5th grade students are doing a philanthropy project about how to improve the severely reducing insect populations around the world. 5th graders have read about the causes of the decline and have generated responses. 5th grade and Green Team are planting an “insect garden” with native plants that will help the survival of native insects. SAVE THE DATE: April 27th, morning-noon. SIGN UP FOR WORK SPOTS HERE! Note: We will sign off for high school volunteers. Time Running Out To Book A Spot At Summer Dillo Camps!
