Happy Friday! We hope your kiddo had a great second week of 5th grade. We're starting to get in the swing of things, and are having a great year so far!
If you haven’t done so already, please complete this GOOGLE FORM at your earliest convenience! It helps us get to know you and your child’s needs (and provides us with nuts and bolts details like contact info, how your child gets home from school, etc.). Each Tuesday, your child will participate in an SEL (Social Emotional Learning) lesson during their math class; Ms. Salome and Ms. Wirht will combine classes and co-teach during this time. You can expect a “Home Link” page in your child’s Wednesday folder most weeks. SEL Home Links are an optional at-home page meant for families to complete together, mirroring the topics discussed at school each week. They can be a great jumping off point for discussions, if nothing else! Back to School Night will be held next Thursday, September 6; from 5:30-6:00 pm there will be a school-wide teacher introduction in the cafeteria. Then from 7:00-8:00 pm, 5th grade BTSN will also be held in the cafeteria. We’ll be discussing our academic year ahead, as well as Dillo Quest (5th grade overnight trip), middle school selection, and more. We hope you can make it! We’ll post our presentation on the 5th grade website if you are unable to attend. Your child received an application for an Austin Public Library card -- please complete and return to your child’s homeroom teacher ASAP! A representative will take care of the rest, and a library card will allow your child to check out digital books from the APL system, in addition to the other ways your child can already check out books from school. There are no late fees on digital ebooks or audiobooks! Your child can also use this card to check out physical books if you take them to a physical Austin library branch, but late fees can be applied to physical books and DVDs. Please contact Hill librarian, Ms. Pustka ([email protected]) with questions, or if your child needs another application. For last minute transportation changes, please only call the office or your teacher’s classroom phone (do not email us). We check our email often, but sometimes we don’t see these emails in time! Students are NOT permitted to hang out on the playground or sport court after school unless their parent or guardian is supervising beginning immediately after the bell rings. This doesn't mean kids can jump in last minute just because another child's parent is there. Please contact the office if you have further questions. Thanks for reading, and have a wonderful three-day weekend! ~5th Grade Team

Happy Friday! We hope your family had a great first week back. You can expect a Friday blog post both emailed to you and posted on the homepage of our 5th grade website. When you have a minute, familiarize yourself with the site and it's contents. We'll add to it throughout the year!
If you haven’t done so already, please complete this GOOGLE FORM at your earliest convenience! It helps us get to know you and your child’s needs, and provides us with details like contact info, how your child gets home from school, etc. We discussed technology expectations this week, and sent home a pink Classroom Technology Contract that must be signed by both students and parents in order to continue technology usage. We have extras if your child needs another copy. Fifth grade is lucky to have 90+ iPads and 100+ laptops to share between classes, so caring for our devices is of utmost importance! Briles-Mayer-Wirht Trio ELA: If you haven’t already signed it, please look out for your students’ ELA journal for a sheet about the 40 Book Challenge this year that Ms. Briles needs EVERY PARENT IN THE BRILES-MAYER-WIRT TRIO to sign. You will also have to help your child select the number of books they will read for this challenge over the course of the year. You can read more about the 40 book challenge here. Thanks for reading, and have a great weekend! ~5th Grade Team From all of the fifth grade teachers, welcome! We are so excited for the year ahead!
When you have a minute, the MOST IMPORTANT thing we need from you is to please fill out THIS GOOGLE FORM! This website is the fifth grade 'hub' of all important information. On Fridays, we will post and email out a blog update detailing the week ahead. PLEASE read our updates -- they'll be brief and packed with vital information. Individual teachers might maintain separate websites or Blend courses for their individual content areas, but the most important dates and grade-level information will be housed here. More info to come! As a team of six teachers, we have worked together for quite a few years now, and we even like each other! :) We strive to work collaboratively, create diverse and rich learning experiences, and foster student independence as they look towards middle school. Our team functions as departmentalized trios, meaning your child with have THREE teachers that they'll rotate between each day, spending equal amounts of time in each class. The trios are as follows: Briles: English Language Arts (reading/writing) Mayer: Science, Social Studies Wirht: Math Wilder: English Language Arts (reading/writing), Social Studies Cotten: Science Salome: Math In addition, your child will receive instruction in SEL (Social Emotional Learning), Latin, and counselor guidance lessons. The Hill Parent Handbook is digital this year. Please click here to read it at your convenience. We are so happy to be on this journey with you all, and can't wait for the learning and adventures ahead! ~5th Grade Team |
