The 5th grade Holiday Party is scheduled for next Thursday, December 20 from 1:30-2:30pm in the Commons. This is a “students only” event, but parent volunteers (organized through room parents) are welcome. Unless your room parent has communicated otherwise, your child doesn’t need to bring anything to the party.
We know this is a busy and stressful time of year for many -- lots of fun things going on, magnet school applications, report cards, etc. There is a definite increase in rigor and workload in 5th grade, but we are also supporting your students in the best ways we can to promote a growth mindset and continued learning. We are lucky to work with such supportive families, and we appreciate working together in mutually-respectful partnership to ensure success for your child in 5th grade! MATH: We’re about a week ahead (woo-hoo!) and will spend next week reviewing all things decimals. Each day we’ll focus on a different aspect of decimals (adding/subtracting, multiplication, rounding, comparing, etc.) and have a corresponding homework sheet. If your child shows mastery in class, they will have the option of skipping out on homework for that night. We are doing decimal “mega-stations!” today in class (eight station rotations between Ms. Wirht and Ms. Salome), so everyone should feel confident going into next week. ELA: Donate magazines for collage and found poetry! What is a collage poem or found poem? Not all students will choose these formats, but we would like a collection of magazines available for students to rifle through to locate base texts for found poems or word collections for collage poems as options. This type of poetry takes special creativity and analytical skills and it’s exciting to watch what kids create with the words they find lying around. Send donations to Ms. Briles and Mr. Wilder. Thank you! Thanks for reading, and have a great weekend! ~5th Grade Team
